Grace Murray Hopper


Grace Murray Hopper was one of the first ladies of computing. She worked in the US Navy as a programmer for the Harvard I and II computers. Grace also worked for Univac, then a stored program computer that would set many trends with in the computer industry.

In 1952 she developed the first compiler software, a compiler translates a programmers code into machine code (binary) which is made up of zero's and one's. In her time Grace Murray Hopper also played a key role in the creation of COBOL and Flow-Matic whic are both business machine languages.

In 1969 she was named Data Processing Management Associations first computer science "Man of the year". She passed away in 1992 aged 86 as one of the greatest people of the computer industry.
