The history of the Internet




The year 1991 is the year that Tim Berners-Lee releases the source code for the early software of the web, the web will soon revolutionise the way that the planet works and communicates. In the same year Gopher is released, the first point and click way of navigating files on the Internet.

In 1992 the number of Internet hosts exceeds well over 1,000,000 and in 1993 the annual growth of the Internet is an amazing 341,634%.

By the time 1994 rolls around there are a few major steps forward. Marc Andreesen and Jim Clarkson form Netscape Communications Corp. Pizza hut take their first order over the net for a mushroom, pepperoni with extra cheese, and the rolling stones broadcast the Vodoo Lounge tour over the Internet.

By 1995 the web makes up the bulk of Internet traffic, the Vatican went online with www.vatican.va. 1995 was the year that Sun Microsystems released Java a programming language which enhances the content of the web and the way that it is delivered over the Internet.

1996 the Internets 25th Birthday, 40 million people are connected to the Internet, more than $1 billion a year changes hands as people begin to shop online. There are over 150 countries "online" with over 10 million Internet hosts. The age of the Internet has arrived, and is changing the way that people all over the world live, work and communicate with each other.
