The Internet is a massive international network of networks. The networks connects millions of computers together, the computers exchange data and information between themselves in a very smooth and quick way. The Internet is only possible with the global telecommunications system, all data that is transferred over the Internet is done so by passing the data through the network of telephone systems, fibre optic cables and the global satellite networks.
Unlike many other information systems in use today, the Internet is decentralized, there is no central infrastructure or database that controls the computers that are connected to the Internet, all computers on the Internet act independently of all other computers unless they are programmed to do other wise.
There are many different services available to computers that are connected to the Internet, such as, e-mail, FTP (file transferre protocol), news groups and the Internet just to name a few. There are countless different rules that are used to transferre the data needed to make all of these services available. These rules are known as protocols, and are the fundamentals of the Internet.
